This expanded volume is published at a time when the world grows ever smaller and commercial relationships are the common currency that links countries and cultures across the globe. This reality has only come into sharper focus in a year when the global COVID-19 pandemic not only has ravaged public health and private lives but also has profoundly unsettled a vast array of commercial relationships, with as yet uncertain ultimate consequences.

Steven M Bierman, Sidley Austin LLP

Steven M Bierman, a partner of Sidley Austin LLP, served as head or co-head of Sidley’s 100-lawyer New York litigation department for 25 years, and served as a global leader of the commercial litigation and disputes practice. His practice emphasises complex, high-stakes litigation involving a broad range of business, commercial and financial disputes; securities fraud; class actions; claims regarding mergers and acquisitions; disputes in bankruptcy; theft of trade secrets; and employment-related claims. Steve litigates and tries cases in US federal and state courts and in domestic and international arbitrations, and has led internal corporate investigations. His commercial litigation experience includes representing US and foreign companies in disputes involving alleged breach of contract, representations and warranties, purchase and sale of businesses, obligations under financial instruments, and fraud and other business torts. Steve’s shareholder class action and derivative litigation experience has involved alleged violations of US securities laws and breaches of corporate fiduciary duties, and pre-litigation shareholder demands. Steve also regularly advises clients regarding early evaluation and resolution of claims and defences, has extensive experience representing clients in mediation of disputes, and serves on the Southern District of New York’s panel of court-appointed mediators. Steve has been recognised as a United States and a New York Litigation Star (Commercial Litigation) by Benchmark Litigation 2020, The Best Lawyers in America 2020, The Legal 500 (Commercial Litigation) and Chambers USA 2017.
